MI Paste and Caries Prevention

Who is at risk of developing dental caries?

Dental caries describes the process of tooth decay that destroys tooth enamel. It typically develops on top of teeth but can form between them as well. Since caries results from acids released when sugars interact with bacteria in dental biofilm, anyone consuming sugar faces risk. However, certain groups face greater risk: those with poor oral hygiene, unhealthy diets high in artificial sweeteners, smokers, and children.

What is MI Paste?

Minimal Intervention paste is a topical tooth creme, not regular toothpaste, that applies daily to protect teeth from caries and damage. This water-based, sugar-free cream comes in a tube for convenient use. Developed by GC America, MI Paste differs from fluoride-focused products by containing casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) complex, naturally occurring milk derivatives that release calcium and phosphate ions. The paste binds with bacteria and plaque to enable remineralization, strengthening teeth against caries and hypersensitivity.

Does MI Paste really work?

Research yields mixed results. A 2008 study found MI paste showed no remineralizing effects on early enamel lesions, though it caused slightly less demineralization than artificial saliva. A 2011 study demonstrated statistically significant lesion reduction with MI Paste Plus versus no treatment. However, 2017 and 2018 studies produced conflicting findings. Overall, the evidence suggests potential benefits but requires further research.

Potential benefits

Despite mixed research, dentists report MI Paste may help with multiple dental concerns:

  • Alleviates dry mouth
  • Buffers acids produced by plaque and bacteria
  • Protects and rebuilds tooth surface
  • Decreases tooth hypersensitivity
  • Reduces oral acid levels
  • Prevents white spot lesions
  • Aids caries and erosion management

How to apply MI Paste?

Apply a pea-sized amount by spreading between thumb and middle finger across inner and outer tooth surfaces, or use a cotton swab. Wait three minutes, then spit without rinsing. Avoid eating for 30 minutes. Repeat twice daily. Alternatively, apply a pea-sized amount to a toothbrush and brush for three minutes without rinsing afterward.

Conclusion

MI Paste is a sugar-free cream promising tooth strengthening and caries prevention through remineralization using CPP-ACP technology. Though studies show mixed efficacy, dentists report it may alleviate hypersensitivity, dry mouth, and reduce oral acids. Professional consultation is recommended before use.
