Minimally Invasive Dentistry - The Basic Information That You Need To Know

Minimally invasive dentistry has gained popularity in recent years, with dentists worldwide endorsing this technique. It is recommended for everyone, particularly those who prioritize prevention over treatment of dental diseases.

What is minimally invasive dentistry?

Minimally invasive dentistry, also known as microdentistry, encompasses procedures designed to conserve and improve the patient's oral health, providing healthy tooth structure. Dentists using this approach remove as little tooth structure as possible while addressing problems and improving overall oral health.

This approach reduces the need for future dental repairs through long-lasting materials and efficient treatment. Dentists perform a series of tests to determine factors such as healthy bacteria levels in saliva and presence of tooth decay or caries.

Beyond prevention, minimally invasive dentistry analyzes and evaluates the possible risk and catches the problem in its early stage. An example includes recommending daily mouthwash for patients with high oral bacteria levels.

Air abrasion

Air abrasion is a drill-less technique using a stream of aluminum oxide particles from compressed air, nitrogen gas, or bottled carbon dioxide to remove tooth decay. These abrasive particles at high velocity remove small concentrations of tooth structure.

The hardness of the material being removed and device parameters affect effectiveness. This technique removes pit and fissure surface stains on enamel before veneer placement and can detect caries and other defects.

Remineralization

Remineralization restores minerals lost during demineralization, a chemical process removing calcium and phosphate from enamel, dentine, and oral tissues. Studies show demineralization of teeth is caused by acidic attack through dietary acids consumed through food and beverages and microbial attack from bacteria present in the mouth.

Untreated demineralization leads to caries and other problems. Fluoride is considered the gold standard for remineralization, though other options exist including toothpaste containing casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP), gums, mouthwash with xylitol, and Novamin bioactive gas.

Sealants

Dental sealants are plastic coatings protecting teeth from harmful bacteria causing decay. They are applied to biting surfaces of back teeth (molars and premolars) where food easily becomes trapped in small pits and grooves.

The application process is quick, taking only minutes per tooth, and is completely pain-free. Once applied, the sealant forms a hard shield preventing bacteria and food from reaching vulnerable tooth surfaces.

Bite splints

Bite splints prevent damage from teeth grinding, particularly during sleep. These hard plastic wafers fit over upper teeth with metal clasps that keep them in place.

The primary purpose is stopping bruxism, a habit that wears down tooth enamel and causes damage. Though initially uncomfortable, patients adjust quickly. Proper maintenance requires storing splints in a container with cold water to prevent drying.

Inlays and onlays

Inlays and onlays restore tooth form after procedures such as caries removal. These restorations repair back teeth with mild to moderate decay and address cracked or fractured teeth not severe enough to require crowns.

Patients with extensive tooth damage unsuitable for fillings are ideal candidates. Major benefits include durability and the ability to strengthen teeth.

Conclusion

Minimally invasive dentistry focuses on prevention and risk reduction rather than solely treating existing issues. Through high-quality, long-lasting materials, patient education on oral care, and regular dental check-ups for early problem detection, this approach is widely praised by dentists and positively received by patients.
